ABOUT US

Pastor and Elders

Andrew Zekveld became our pastor on the 1st of June, 2015. Before that, he was the Associate Pastor at Grace Fellowship church in Pretoria for just over four years. He trained for the ministry under John MacArthur at The Master’s Seminary and graduated at the end of 2010. He got married to his wife, Vicky, in 2009, and they have three young boys.

Gavin Talbot was part of the original group who planted our church. He is married to Heidi, and they have two teenage sons.

Les De Croes (pronounced “De Crow”) was also part of the planting of this church and was asked to aid in the shepherding of the church during its initial growth. He is married to Janet, and they have two adult children, and four grandchildren.

Our Story

Living Hope Baptist Church was planted as a result of some families traveling from Pietermaritzburg to Hillcrest Baptist Church every Sunday, longing for the day in which they could have a solid church closer to home. In 2013 the Lord graciously answered their prayers and provided all the practical things needed to start a new local church. This included the mother-church oversight of Hillcrest Baptist Church, some additional support from Paul Washer’s HeartCry Missionary Society and the church-planting leadership of Dave Webster.

The first service was held on the 3rd of February, 2013, in the home of Gavin and Heidi Talbot. Over the next two years it grew steadily in number and by the end of 2014 they were seriously praying for a permanent pastor and a larger venue. In February of 2015, Dave Webster and three other men interviewed Andrew Zekveld as a pastoral candidate, and after discussing it with the congregation extended a formal invitation to him to come and pastor Living Hope Baptist Church. He accepted the call, and in June 2015 moved his family down to settle in Pietermaritzburg. During this time, Clarendon Primary School graciously agreed to offer their facilities as a place of worship and the first service at Clarendon Primary School, still under the leadership of Dave Webster, was held on the 12th of April, 2015. The time at Clarendon Primary School came to an end in 2017, and from the 2nd of April, 2017, the Church met at the Saint Patrick’s Anglican Church building on Victoria Road.

Our heartfelt thanks goes to our Heavenly Father Whose good hand was upon us ever since the very first prayer for a local church plant was uttered. He has indeed done far beyond what we could ask or think.
