Psalm 135 exposes the striking contrast between the true living God and the gods of this world.

The true living God is a God Who chooses people to love (Ps 135:4). He is great (Ps 135:5) and does only, and all, that which pleases Him (Ps 135:6). He rules over nature (Ps 135:7) as well as over the wicked for the benefit of those whom He chose to love (Ps 135:8-12). He is eternally famous (Ps 135:13).

The gods of this world might look pretty, but wouldn’t even exist if someone didn’t manufacture them (Ps 135:15). The have no active sense or faculties (Ps 135:16-17), and those who follow them become as senseless and incapable of functioning in this world (Ps 135:18).

This contrast is striking. But this Psalm is not merely an exposé of the contrast between the true God and gods of this world. This Psalm is a Psalm of assurance to those who worship the true living God that they will be proven to be right when this life is over.

the LORD will vindicate his people
and have compassion on his servants.

Psalm 135:14 (ESV)

God wins, and we who have forsaken this world to follow Him will benefit from His victory. We therefore have an obligation to fear the LORD and praise Him accordingly (Ps 135:19-21).

Praise the LORD!
Praise the name of the LORD,
give praise, O servants of the LORD,
who stand in the house of the LORD,
in the courts of the house of our God!
Praise the LORD, for the LORD is good;
sing to his name, for it is pleasant!
